Protest in MAPOLY, as graduating students allege plots to delay NYSC deployment

Fresh report reaching Maustech News as at PRESS TIME from Abeokuta this morning Monday March 26 has it that HND II Graduating  students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic are strongly protesting alleged plots and plans by the institution’s management  and lecturers to delay their deployment for the compulsory National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) Scheme which they’re due for.

According to some of the protesting students,  “ASUP MAPOLY has allegedly deliberately refused to release results for all levels while the current graduands won’t go for NYSC until November 2018”.

Students of Mapoly Will Pay For Damages - Governor Amosun Says

Governor Ibikunle Amosun has vowed that all the students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic ,Abeokuta would be made to pay penalty for allegedly destroying property in some areas in Abeokuta
during the protest.

Amosun also said he would not pay the staff of MAPOLY for the three Months they stayed off work,claiming that the workers in the Polytechnic were blackmailing his government.

The Governor stated at the sideline of the commissioning of skills aquisition centre at Ogun State Technical College ,Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.

Amosun disclosed that his administration has acquired a heavy machine from Germany for mechanical students,saying, there is no going back on the plan to establish new
Polytechnic in Ipokia.

While reacting to the Protest by Students of MAPOLY on Monday and Tuesday, Amosun lamented that the students had damaged a lot of property during their protest ,threatening that all the students would be made to pay penalty when they resume .

Meanwhile, the government has listed eighteen courses that have been accredited by the NBTE  include:

2. Mechanical Engineering Technology
3. Civil  engineering
4. Building Technology
5. Architectural Technology
6. Quantity Surveying
7. Estate Management Valuation
8. Surveying and Geo-Informatics.

Others are:

NO PROTEST TODAY AS STUDENT TO RESTATEGIES PLAN

We need to re-strategies and come out with another plan i.e next move and where to meet. For the blackweek.

You agree with me that some of us (Mapaites Students) still at the police custody, which NANS chairman #Movement assure us of their bail, so we can't go on street for the protest when some of us in police custody.

After proper strategy and consultation, we shall back on black week but let's leave tomorrow for good plan.

Acting Mapoly Rector Escaped BLACKWEEK DAY2 #SAVEMAPOLY

I think its high time we let the Govt and the school management know that we are fed of this game they are involved in. Its affecting our personal life and if care is not taken things may worsen more than this.

The incident happened this morning when we all gathered at Skating ground to go and have dialogue with the school management most especially the Rector. On getting to school, the gate was locked, we told them at the school gate that we didn't come for Violence, that we are here to see the Rector.
The school gate was opened, on getting there, the school PRO was sighted trying to escape through the bush behind the uncommissioned filling station beside the gate, some students went after him and told him we only wanted to see the Rector, and he complied with us, he was taken down to the school admin with a bike to call the attention of the Rector to the students at the school entrance.
 

Few minutes later, the CSO brought the Rector in the Campus Security Surveillance hilux bus, open roof, the Rector actually started his speech, but it reached a point where he started acting cunning, so the students shouted that we want you to follow us down to the governor's office, and he actually agreed to do that.
 

We moved out of the school premises in masses having the Rector amidst us. When we got to Iyana Oloke at the end of the untarred road, some armed policemen approached us and ask that where are we going to, we told them we are heading to the governor's office, and they allowed us to pass. On getting to the tarred road, the person who drove the Hilux suddenly opened the door, and started driving recklessly, hitting students on the road, meanwhile we have close to 20 students at the back of the hilux jeep, some fell down, the bus stepped on some students leg, some from behind. The remaining students at the back of the Hilux were nowhere to be found now.
 

That was what happened that provoked the students and we mobbed the road and silence everywhere to panseke. On getting there, we met armed policemen fully loaded and set with their gun ready to fire shots at us.

Merciful Nigerians, come and save our lives from oppressors, we are tired, we can't continue to face this sufferness.

We recorded about 29 students that were injured right now. The Rector was not kidnapped, the CSO carried him away.

MAPOLY lecturers punishing their students, says Commissioner.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Modupe Mujota, has revealed that the lecturers of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) are punishing students and have picked the wrong battle.

She made this remark when fielding questions from members of the State House Committee on Finance and Appropriation presiding over the budget defence at the House of Assembly complex on Friday.

Mujota opined that request tabled by Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, MAPOLY Chapter that admission of students be allowed into either MAPOLY or Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia is unsubstantial.

Mujota claimed that it was not the business of the lecturers to decide on admission, claiming that the strike is de-marketing the school in the admission market.

Her words, "They are insisting that admission must commence either at Ipokia or Mapoly for OND, and we are saying it’s not your problem, your problem was the HND which have been addressed.

“The lecturers delaying the start of the examination is de-marketing the school themselves because those who are to be applying for the HND programme both full time and part time are going to be second-guessing themselves, that why should I apply for a school that is yet to write their examination?"

Meanwhile, she explained that the ministry was always open for communication with the institution, noting that she had on different occasion met with various groups from the institution.

"I have played host to different teams from Academic staff to the non-academic staff union of the school. We have explained and articulated what the thinking of the administration was and the fact that we are not going back on Ipokia."

She denounced the lecturers unyielding attitude, asserting that “the joy of every lecturer is to see their their students pass exams and go on to do well in their future endeavours, but the lecturers of MAPOLY are killing what should be their joy.

She also accused the lecturers of being mischievous in their handling of the whole issue, claiming that their refusal to submit examination questions even before the strike could attract some punitive measures from the government.

"We could decide to go hard on them because their action was a violation of calendar, they should have submitted their questions way before they started their strike, there is a bit of mischief in their handling of the matter."

When questioned on the unpaid salary of the lecturers, she said, "I don’t know where you pay people that don’t work."

Mujota did state that Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s stance that all students of MAPOLY would finish their programme in MAPOLY is still valid, noting that the lecturers also have four years to formalize their decision on whether to go to Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia which they have been assured of free passage or vie for positions based on their qualifications at Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH).
