Why Mapoly might go on strike again

mapoly news

It's not new that the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia students is yet to resume for the first semester even after being admitted since last year December 2018. And this is strike Mapoly has been having since last year due to the issue of transition transmission (lol *wink) upgrading of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic to a University and the of (OgunPoly) the new polytechnic.

The Governor of Ogun state, Amosun still insisting that lecturers from Mapoly need to move to Ogun State Poly, Ipokia to start with the new students and the lecturers is not happy with the idea of the governor.

The new students as well express their fear of how living life in the new site of Ipokia will be inconducive for them. Some of the students already rent an apartment here in Ojere city and there have been worried that if moving to Ipokia clicked, what will they do with the house they already paid for.

Has stated earlier that Mapoly is set to resume the 208/2019 session in April, this might have to change again. Mapoly will go on strike immediately after the exam ends on April 13th until May 29th that Amosun will hand over to the new government with the hope that the new governor will nullify Amosun's decision of moving the lecturers and students to kick off the new Polytechnic.

We hereby implore that the new ND intake of Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia to exercise patience until when the government and the school management will finalize the issue on ground.

Will Ogunpoly and MAUSTECH Scrapped by Prince Dapo Abiodun?

Will Ogun State Polytechnic (Ogunpoly) and Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH) scrapped by Prince Dapo Abiodun?
There is the possibility the governor-elect of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, will scrap Ogun State Polytechnic and Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH), two of his predecessor, incumbent Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s legacies in the education sector when he is sworn in on May 29, 2019.

An inside source disclosed to Global Excellence that one of Abiodun’s plans to save the dying Moshood Abiola Polytechnic was to discard some of the educational policies of Amosun including scrapping the Ogun Poly and the university he recently established.

The source said that the governor-elect has set up a committee of six professors to look into the issue and ensure that things are returned to the status quo regarding the two institutions.
The governor, the source stressed, specifically wants the MAPOLY policy reviewed and MAUSTECH scrapped.

In September 2017, the two new institutions, Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH) and the Ogun State Polytechnic, took off in Abeokuta and Ipokia respectively.

ASUP MAPOLY RESOLVES TO RESUME PART-TIME LECTURES

Members of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics in Nigeria (ASUP) of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta Chapter at its congress on Thursday, 11th October, 2018, agreed to resume lectures for all Part-Time categories of students with effect from Monday, 15th October, 2018, following the fulfillment of part of its requests by the Management.
It should be recalled that an indefinite strike action embarked upon by the ASUP to press home its demands in September, 2018, obstructed academic activities for Part-Time Students of the Institution.
By this development, all Part-Time National Diploma and Higher National Diploma students are advised to resume for lectures on Monday, 15th October, 2018.
Meanwhile, all categories of students, who are yet to complete the payment of school fees (i.e 40% balance) and registration for the 2017/2018 academic session, are being reminded to do so before the closure of the portal.

OGUNPOLY IPOKIA GETS ACCREDITATION, APPROVAL TO ADMIT STUDENTS

The Ogun State Government has announced that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Joint Admissions And Matriculation Board (JAMB) have granted full approvals for the take off of academic activities at the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia with immediate effect.
It wil be recalled that some students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta today visited the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta to express their concerns about the delay in the commencement of their examinations and continued strike action of the lecturers which they noted had greatly undermined the completion of their various programmes at the institution.

Although a section of the students displayed some unacceptable conduct while the interaction lasted but as a responsible government, we appreciate their anxiety and therefore assured them that government was working day and night to ensure that all issues relating their concerns were resolved.
Following several inspection visits to the site of the Polytechnic, we are delighted to report that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has granted accreditation to the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia to commence academic activities in18 programmmes

In a related development, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has also announced the opening of its portals for prospective students to enable them register for courses at the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia for the 2017/2018 Academic Session.

This development further confirms government’s position that the interest and welfare of all students of its various institutions as well as their parents is paramount and will always be accorded a pride of place by our government. We are confident that normalcy will return to these institutions very shortly.

For the benefit of all stakeholders, we like to state that the crisis arose in the first place from the refusal of the lecturers to call off their strike.

Among their demands is that government must pay them full salaries including the months they did not work on account of an illegal and totally unwarranted work to rule action. For the avoidance of doubt, Government restates that no one will be paid for work not done. And no one will be allowed to hold the good people of Ogun State to ransom.

We call on our students to immediately return to their classes as we continue to work round the clock to resolve other outstanding issues.

PROTEST: Mapoly Students Declares "BLACK WEEK" In Abeokuta (See Facebook/Whatsapp Screenshot) #SaveMapoly

The #SaveMapoly Campaign, the Average Nigerian Student Dilemma and Need for Proactive Policies

Olanrewaju Oyedeji

When I woke up and saw students thronging to the social media with their hashtags, right in my head I knew they have been frustrated and saw the Need to act.
Nonetheless , it Is worrisome that even with the embarrassing state of Nigerian Education and what students are made to pass through, constant disagreements on policies continue to ravage our campuses.
I have heard arguments that politicians act the way they do because they don't have their kids in Nigerian public Varsities, while I agree to some extent, I believe it still boils down to lack of basic urge for responsibility. It is funny that it is when students file out or launch a Social Media campaign that conflicts receive very fast pace of resolution. In a situation where the world is clamoring for better Educated individuals, it is funny that our own country keep diminishing in quality but improves in quantity.
One can begin to ask questions of if the Ogun State Government made a unilateral decision in deciding to turn Mapoly to a University, in a normal setting, the staff Union should be carried along when the decisions were made.
It seems in Nigeria we care less about the time factor, administrators sometimes I think feel students should be ready to wait even longer.

A responsible government should not wait till students protest or take policies that would harm them.
While it is encouraging that students now explore the Social and Digital Media, the fundamental question one needs to ask is why disagreements need to take place from time to time in Nigerian Education sector, there has been arguments that Education is too cheap in Nigeria but Education especially for a developing country like ours should be made accessible for as low as possible.
The #SaveMapoly Campaign shows the continued dearth we have in the Education sector, the need to revamp the sector and the need to allow more funding which would be monitored from time to time.
Sometimes it's not just about establishing a University, it's about not delaying even the future of the thousands of students policies affect, only those that take Education seriously, build a future.
All stakeholders should join the voice to #SaveMapoly and bring everyone to listen to the plight of this beautifully made students even as they cry in pain.

MAPOLY LECTURERS EMBARK ON INDEFINITE STRIKE

Lecturers of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic have embarked on indefinite strike.

This was disclosed on Friday by the Chairman of the union, Kola Abiola after the union's congress on Campus.

Press Club MAPOLY reliably gathered that this is following the failure of the state government to honour their demands over the controversies that trailed the conversion of the 38-year old polytechnic to a varsity.

It would be recalled that the union had given the government two weeks ultimatum to meet their new demands.

Should MAPOLY goes into extinction, Recession will take over Abeokuta - ASUP Chairman

Following the crisis rocking the conversion of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic to a University of Science and Technology and establishment of a new Ogun state Polytechnic in Ipokia , the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of polytechnic, (ASUP), MAPOLY, Comrade Kola Abiola, has warned that, the extinction of MAPOLY may cripple businesses in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The ASUP Chairman, who spoke during an interview on a radio programe, Ayekooto on a private radio station Sweet 101.7 Fm , Abeokuta, explained that, most of the markets including, Panseke, Kuto, Omida and Lafenwa all in Abeokuta are duly patronized by MAPOLY students.

“Traders will cry for help, transporters may die of hunger while houses will be vacant in areas like Abule Ojere, Oluwo, Onikolobo, Panseke, Ita-eko and other student areas”.

Speaking on the crisis, he lamented that the Union has not received any positive response from the state government, saying that they have written three separate letters to the government through the commissioner for education Modupe Mujota.

The ASUP Chairman further explained that the association is not against the conversion of the Polytechnic to University, saying, the union is more concerned about the survival and sustenance of both Institutions.

Comrade Abiola however noted that, the 2017 \ 2018 admission might not be successful, saying there are no plans for the new students both in Abeokuta and Ipokia.

In his words “In MAPOLY there is always about 9 to 10 hours non- interrupted electricity supply, but since this crisis began, we hardly get electricity for three hours. “We are concerned about the survival and sustenance of both Institutions. But, nobody is talking to us, we have written three separate letters to the government through the commissioner for education and one directly to the government, we got no response. “The government doesn’t give us money to finance the institution, yet we find means by paying our staffs. “We didn’t say the government is doing bad, what we need is that, they should call us for dialogue and listen to our points”.

Meanwhile ,there was confusion yesterday in Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta as the staff of the institution shunned the proposed second semester exams billed to start yesterday. This was following the faceoff between Ogun State government and members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, MAPOLY chapter over the conversion of the Polytechnic to Moshood University of Science and Technology, Abeokuta, and establishment of Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia.

Students who had prepared for the exams were left stranded at the examination centers as there was no one to conduct the exams nor address the students on the new development. Members of the Academic Union were however seen gathering for an emergency congress at the Union House within the Polytechnic. There was no one to address the press on the outcome of the congress which lasted for about two hours but a member of the Union who spoke in confidence with our correspondent revealed that the congress declared a 'work-to-rule'.

The Chairman of the Union, Kola Abiola, who was later monitored on a television programme insisted that the lecturers of the institution had become endangered specie over the conversion. The Chairman said that while the government did not include any members of the union in the technical committee, the union was also not consulted by the same committee.

He explained that while the new University has been recognised by the National University Commission, NUT, the staff are yet to know the status of the new Polytechnic. He lamented that while the Polytechnic has not been recognised by the National Board for Technical Education, courses are yet to be accredited.

With all these controversies, according to Abiola, the government is also bent on moving the lecturers to the new polytechnic. He said, "If you look at the website of NUC, you will see Moshood Abiola University of Technology that has been recognised, what's is the status of Ogun State Polytechnic with National Board for Technical Education?.

"This is a question we are constantly asking Ogun State government and the technical committee. If I am going to Ipokia and accreditation has not been gotten for Ipokia, what happens to my fate? "The Governor of Ogun State has said they are in agreement with NBTE and to our own understanding, we don't know when NBTE goes into an agreement with anybody because there's a standard for accreditation.

"We are not saying we all want to work in the University. The university has been recognised but no course has been accredited but the Polytechnic has not been accredited by NBTE, the Polytechnic has no accredited course. As government, do you want to bring in students for courses that have not been accredited?

Abiola explained that three different letters had been written to the state Commissioner of Education, Modupe Mujota while another one was written to the Governor through her office. He however said that none of the letters, including one which was published on a daily newspaper, was acknowledged by the government.

While asked to talk on the proposed exams for which time table had been released, Abiola said, "We are not on strike, but exam is not starting, lectures still continue." Efforts to speak with the management of the Institution proved unsuccessful as calls put across to his mobile line of the Public Relation Officer, Sulaiman Adebiyi was switched off.

GOVENOR AMOSUN IBIKUNLE SPEECH AT THE FOUNDATION OF OGUN STATE POLYTECHNIC

ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE,  HIS EXCELLENCY, SENATOR IBIKUNLE AMOSUN CON, FCA, AT THE GROUND BREAKING/FOUNDATION CEREMONY OF THE OGUN STATE POLYTECHNIC, IPOKIA, HELD ON FRIDAY, 15TH SEPTEMBER, 2017
Image result for AMOSUN

Protocols,
As part of our Administrations commitment towards the provision of Affordable and Qualitative Education, we resolved that there is a need to establish another State institution of higher learning, especially in the area of science and technology which will help to accommodate the increasing number of our youth seeking tertiary education; and, promote our development of more scientists and technologists needed for our continued socio-economic development, in line with global developmental trends.

2. Through the sovereign and collective will of the good people of Ogun State and by an act of the Ogun State House of Assembly, we recently changed the status of our leading Polytechnic, the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, to a degree-awarding institution.  The Institution, which will henceforth be known as the Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH), will enlist in the comity of Universities in the nation as one of the foremost citadels of learning in Nigeria. And, in its stead, a new multi-campus Polytechnic to assume the original name of the Polytechnic, that is, the Ogun State Polytechnic, emerging in Ipokia, in the Ogun West Senatorial District.

3. The journey to establish this new Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, began with the resolution of the 51st State Executive Council Meeting of 2016. This was later sent as a Bill to the State House of Assembly and passed into law on 13th March, 2017. The journey took a step further into reality when on Monday 3rd July, 2017, an official presentation of documents for the establishment of the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, was undertaken at the National Board for Technical Education, Abuja. We thank God Almighty that the dream for the establishment is finally becoming a reality.

4. This brings me to the primary purpose of our gathering here today. It is the demonstration of the commitment of our Administration to continue to ensure that the Yewa axis of our dear State is not lagging behind in the socio-economic indices. Just two days ago, we were here for the site inspection; and, today we are here for the ground-breaking/foundation-laying ceremony as a demonstration of the seriousness of our Administration for the Institution to take off in earnest.

5. Undoubtedly, it is pertinent to note that, the Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, remains one of the monumental legacies bequeathed to us by the late Chief Bisi Onabanjo administration. The polytechnic was later  renamed the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in memory of one of the illustrious sons of Ogun State, late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, during the Administration of Chief Olusegun Osoba. And, I am happy to say it loud that Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia is now here.

6. Todays event is a culmination of the desire of our Administration to continue to ensure the even spread and distribution of infrastructural facilities and other socio- economic development projects across the nooks and crannies of our dear State. It is also a fulfilment of one of the major planks of the socio- economic development blue prints our Administration crafted upon our assumption of office in May, 2011. You will all recall that, Affordable and Qualitative Education features most prominently on our 5-Cardinal Programme as encapsulated in our Mission to Rebuild Ogun State; and, this is what is being brought to the fore as a continued demonstration of the resolve of our Administration.

7. Let me assure you that, we will continue to push frontiers in all sectors of the economy of our State. For example, in education, we will continue to provide the ambience and space for our Educational Institutions to make decisions that shape the quality of learning through innovation and positive reinforcement.  We believe that, in doing so, we will build upon the legacies of our founding fathers.

8. By these developments, our niche in technical education aimed at producing professionals with industry-relevant knowledge and skills for innovation and entrepreneurship will continue. Today, our dear State is the industrial capital of Nigeria. We also want to take advantage of our position as an educational hub to meet the personnel demands of the growing industrial economy especially as science and technology skills will continue to be in greater need across our dear State, and even, across Nigeria. Our commitment as an Administration is to leave no stone unturned in crossing the Rubicon of building our human capital and capacity through qualitative and affordable education. This is another effort at sustaining our legacy as the leading State in the area of education. As we say in our parlance in Ogun State,   Ise Ya!

9. The emergence of this polytechnic will change the landscape of Ipokia, in particular, the length and breadth of Yewaland and the entire Ogun West Senatorial District. Let me therefore enjoin all our people in Yewaland to come and contribute your own quota to the development of this Institution.  This Polytechnic should be seen as a collective heritage and all of us must do all within our powers to nurture it to maturity. Therefore, different groups, social and corporate organizations are enjoined to support and contribute to the development of this institution to make it the best in the comity of polytechnics in the entire country and make its graduates compete favourably with their counterparts from all over the world.

10. In the same vein, I charge all and sundry to inculcate the attitude of a good host community to the would-be students that will be coming from far and near to study here. We must all provide them a conducive environment and extend love to them, so that they, in turn, can also contribute to the socio-economic development of the people of Ipokia and Yewaland, in particular, and Ogun State, in general.

11. On this note, I congratulate all the traditional rulers; elders; leaders of thought; and, the entire Yewa People for their resilience and peaceful disposition towards protecting the Yewa interests in the last 40 years since our States creation.

12. Let me seize this opportunity to appreciate the Management of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for the support and cooperation without which this dream could not have come true. We wish to assure NBTE that Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, will not only sustain but surpass the standard of academic excellence that Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, is renowned for. This Polytechnic will be another stamp of our Ogun Standard.

13.  It is therefore with a sense of duty that we now proceed to lay the foundation of the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia to the glory of God and the continued educational emancipation of our people.

14. I thank you all for listening and God bless.

Senator Ibukunle Amosun, CON, FCA
Governor of Ogun State

MAPOLY to MAUSTECH: Don’t Panic, Your Admission Is Intact, Director Assures Students

Salako Nurudeen and Sodiq Ojuroungbe

Following the outcry of students concerning the transition of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, (MAPOLY) to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology, (MAUSTECH) and the creation of Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, the Director, School of Communication and Information Technology, Dr. Goke Raufu has assured the students not to panic concerning their admission status.

This assurance came as a response to the outcry of the 300 level students of mass communication who expressed their fear concerning the transition process which could affect their forthcoming examination.

One of the students identified as Sarah Fadairo, expressed her concern on what would be the fate of the present HND 1 and ND 1 students of the institution if MAPOLY relocated to Ipokia.

Fadairo, disclosed that, the current crisis regarding MAPOLY extinction might put a stop to her education.

She however, appealed to the management and government to come up with a resolution which both parties would benefit from.

Also, a student simply identified as Christine implored the management to release their first semester result of 2016/2017 academic session before the second semester examination.

Christine explained that the crisis facing the conversion of MAPOLY to MAUSTECH has affected students’ preparation for the forthcoming examination which is scheduled to commence on September 18.

While responding to the students’ outburst, the Director assured that their certificate is valid, saying that no legal profession can rubbish it.

Dr. Raufu added that the transition process would not affect the school academic activities, saying “Students has no reason to be panic because the Polytechnic staffs and government are ensuring that the issues would be resolved amicably”.

He also charged the students to be prepared for the forthcoming examination, promising that they will finish their programme successfully.

According to him, you (Students) will finish your programmes successfully as you have applied to MAPOLY and who chooses to attend classes and write examination.

“Be prepare for the forthcoming examination, and be reassured that the conversion has not put a stop to academic activities on campus”, He said.

ASPIRANTS BLAME MAPOLY FOR NOT RELEASING ND FULL TIME FORM

In Maustech News community, aspirants can no longer wait anymore as they got tired why Mapoly is yet to release the ND Full time form for this year. These students need to know what they needed to do as soon as possible so that they can make their plans and decide their fate. But the late releasing of this form keep them in confusing state. Here is some of our community chat from aspirants.

Of recent this what the information we got from the ASUP Mapoly chairman:

As I speak to you now the September salary of members of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic is not guaranted because the government has not allowed us to admit students and this is the government that is not paying us a dime to pay salary. If they are going to start a university, why not make the University to take off and continue to run the polytechnic. As matter of fact, students that filled JAMB form this year to come to Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, if you say you are not admitting those students now, two things will happen to them, they will wait until they are considered by their second choice which would never happen or they will put additional burden on the parents to go and pay more for change of institution meaning that we are not an organized institution in Ogun state which I don’t think we are . But what we are saying is that for this year that you have advertised, let them take students for this year, this school is still running, Ipokia is going on

We hope this will cleared the air about Mapoly not releasing the ND full-time form for this year yet. Mapoly isn't the problem here, the government is. Mapoly cannot do anything about this unless they got the approval of the government.

In our opinion, the ND full-time Form will be released before the end of the month or early next month. We urge you all most especially the aspirant to keep calm and have a little patience. As soon as the form is out, you will be notified on all our social media. Stay updated.

FG Sets Up Negotiating Teams With Polytechnics, Education Colleges

The Federal Government has inaugurated two separate teams to renegotiate the agreements it reached with staff unions in the nation’s public Colleges of Education (CoEs) and Polytechnics in 2010.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who inaugurated the teams in Abuja, said the agreements were due for renegotiation since 2013 but the exercise did not take place because of some unforeseen circumstances.

A statement made available to The AUTHORITY on Wednesday by the Ministry said the Minister charged members of the renegotiating teams to study the agreements entered into with all the unions with a view to reaching a workable and sustainable agreement.

“As members of the government teams, you are expected to play your role with skill and efficiency to come up with agreements that will help in stimulating rapid growth of the Colleges of Education and Polytechnics and make them more competitive and attractive”, he said.

Chairman of Governing Council, Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, Mohammed Ababakar, is to chair the team to renegotiate with Polytechnic Unions, while the Chairman of Governing Council, Federal College of Education, Obudu, Dr Obi Anthony, leads the team to renegotiate with Unions in Colleges of Education.

Each team comprises 14 members made up of relevant stakeholders, including representatives of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment as well as Ministry of Finance.

Others are representatives of Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Budget and National Planning, and that of National Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission.
