MAUSTECH Unrealistic, ‘A Wild Goose Chase’ – ASUP

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, (MAPOLY) branch, Abeokuta, has described as a ‘wild goose chase’, the plan by the Ogun State Government to establish Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology, in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The union, equally expressed doubts over the state government’s capacity and ability to fund the new university in a sustainable manner, considering that salaries of the MAPOLY staff were being paid from students’ school fees.

Rising from a special congress to review the proposed university, yesterday, the union, in a communiqué signed by the ASUP state chairman, Mr. Kola Abiola, the union declared it no longer have confidence in the membership and activities of the transition committee led by former Executive Secretary, National University Commission, Prof. Peter Okebukola.

The communiqué read in part: “What are the resources on ground to facilitate the approval to commence operations in the proposed Ogun State Polytechnic? How is MAUSTECH and the new Ogun State Polytechnic going to be funded, especially the funding of overhead costs in the short run?

“How do we ensure on a sustainable basis, the payment of salaries of over seven hundred (700) existing staff of MAPOLY? This is a pertinent question, given the fact that presently, salaries are mainly sourced from school fees paid and especially now that admission is being suspended and even the new university and Ogun State Polytechnic will of necessity admit less numbers of students (both being new institutions of learning respectively?”

The union, however, noted that the transition committee had lost its relevance, submitting “ASUP MAPOLY chapter is strongly in support of the establishment of Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology.”

MAPOLY to MAUSTECH: Don’t Panic, Your Admission Is Intact, Director Assures Students

Salako Nurudeen and Sodiq Ojuroungbe

Following the outcry of students concerning the transition of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, (MAPOLY) to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology, (MAUSTECH) and the creation of Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, the Director, School of Communication and Information Technology, Dr. Goke Raufu has assured the students not to panic concerning their admission status.

This assurance came as a response to the outcry of the 300 level students of mass communication who expressed their fear concerning the transition process which could affect their forthcoming examination.

One of the students identified as Sarah Fadairo, expressed her concern on what would be the fate of the present HND 1 and ND 1 students of the institution if MAPOLY relocated to Ipokia.

Fadairo, disclosed that, the current crisis regarding MAPOLY extinction might put a stop to her education.

She however, appealed to the management and government to come up with a resolution which both parties would benefit from.

Also, a student simply identified as Christine implored the management to release their first semester result of 2016/2017 academic session before the second semester examination.

Christine explained that the crisis facing the conversion of MAPOLY to MAUSTECH has affected students’ preparation for the forthcoming examination which is scheduled to commence on September 18.

While responding to the students’ outburst, the Director assured that their certificate is valid, saying that no legal profession can rubbish it.

Dr. Raufu added that the transition process would not affect the school academic activities, saying “Students has no reason to be panic because the Polytechnic staffs and government are ensuring that the issues would be resolved amicably”.

He also charged the students to be prepared for the forthcoming examination, promising that they will finish their programme successfully.

According to him, you (Students) will finish your programmes successfully as you have applied to MAPOLY and who chooses to attend classes and write examination.

“Be prepare for the forthcoming examination, and be reassured that the conversion has not put a stop to academic activities on campus”, He said.
