MAPOLY lecturers punishing their students, says Commissioner.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Modupe Mujota, has revealed that the lecturers of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) are punishing students and have picked the wrong battle.

She made this remark when fielding questions from members of the State House Committee on Finance and Appropriation presiding over the budget defence at the House of Assembly complex on Friday.

Mujota opined that request tabled by Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, MAPOLY Chapter that admission of students be allowed into either MAPOLY or Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia is unsubstantial.

Mujota claimed that it was not the business of the lecturers to decide on admission, claiming that the strike is de-marketing the school in the admission market.

Her words, "They are insisting that admission must commence either at Ipokia or Mapoly for OND, and we are saying it’s not your problem, your problem was the HND which have been addressed.

“The lecturers delaying the start of the examination is de-marketing the school themselves because those who are to be applying for the HND programme both full time and part time are going to be second-guessing themselves, that why should I apply for a school that is yet to write their examination?"

Meanwhile, she explained that the ministry was always open for communication with the institution, noting that she had on different occasion met with various groups from the institution.

"I have played host to different teams from Academic staff to the non-academic staff union of the school. We have explained and articulated what the thinking of the administration was and the fact that we are not going back on Ipokia."

She denounced the lecturers unyielding attitude, asserting that “the joy of every lecturer is to see their their students pass exams and go on to do well in their future endeavours, but the lecturers of MAPOLY are killing what should be their joy.

She also accused the lecturers of being mischievous in their handling of the whole issue, claiming that their refusal to submit examination questions even before the strike could attract some punitive measures from the government.

"We could decide to go hard on them because their action was a violation of calendar, they should have submitted their questions way before they started their strike, there is a bit of mischief in their handling of the matter."

When questioned on the unpaid salary of the lecturers, she said, "I don’t know where you pay people that don’t work."

Mujota did state that Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s stance that all students of MAPOLY would finish their programme in MAPOLY is still valid, noting that the lecturers also have four years to formalize their decision on whether to go to Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia which they have been assured of free passage or vie for positions based on their qualifications at Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH).

PROTEST: Mapoly Students Declares "BLACK WEEK" In Abeokuta (See Facebook/Whatsapp Screenshot) #SaveMapoly

The #SaveMapoly Campaign, the Average Nigerian Student Dilemma and Need for Proactive Policies

Olanrewaju Oyedeji

When I woke up and saw students thronging to the social media with their hashtags, right in my head I knew they have been frustrated and saw the Need to act.
Nonetheless , it Is worrisome that even with the embarrassing state of Nigerian Education and what students are made to pass through, constant disagreements on policies continue to ravage our campuses.
I have heard arguments that politicians act the way they do because they don't have their kids in Nigerian public Varsities, while I agree to some extent, I believe it still boils down to lack of basic urge for responsibility. It is funny that it is when students file out or launch a Social Media campaign that conflicts receive very fast pace of resolution. In a situation where the world is clamoring for better Educated individuals, it is funny that our own country keep diminishing in quality but improves in quantity.
One can begin to ask questions of if the Ogun State Government made a unilateral decision in deciding to turn Mapoly to a University, in a normal setting, the staff Union should be carried along when the decisions were made.
It seems in Nigeria we care less about the time factor, administrators sometimes I think feel students should be ready to wait even longer.

A responsible government should not wait till students protest or take policies that would harm them.
While it is encouraging that students now explore the Social and Digital Media, the fundamental question one needs to ask is why disagreements need to take place from time to time in Nigerian Education sector, there has been arguments that Education is too cheap in Nigeria but Education especially for a developing country like ours should be made accessible for as low as possible.
The #SaveMapoly Campaign shows the continued dearth we have in the Education sector, the need to revamp the sector and the need to allow more funding which would be monitored from time to time.
Sometimes it's not just about establishing a University, it's about not delaying even the future of the thousands of students policies affect, only those that take Education seriously, build a future.
All stakeholders should join the voice to #SaveMapoly and bring everyone to listen to the plight of this beautifully made students even as they cry in pain.

GO AND MAKE YOUR RESEARCH, ASUP MAPOLY TELLS NAPS

The stand of ASUP over MAPOLY-OGUNPOLY transformation made by the government of Ogun State remained the assumed unanswered question that everyone including the governor wants to know. Though these had earlier been disseminated by ASUP according to their last communique from the meeting that resulted to the ongoing ASUP MAPOLY indefinite strike, they have however been further told by the ASUP Chairman, Mr. Kola Abiola in a phone conversation held last night with NAPS National Director of Programs, Comrade Oluwasegun Akinniyi.

Over the admission crisis, he was persistent on the fact that they will teach if taken to Ipokia provided there are students to teach and classes to occupy them. In a point to defend the  fact that those conditions were not provided, he said, "stop listening to 'they say', let your press or other interested students go to Ipokia, go and check the building and their status, then come back and tell all students from your result if it is the government or ASUP that had been lying and delaying you."

As regard the salary, he insisted on not saying anything over it, since it  may be a way of speaking to his own favour. "Go to the bursary, find out how much they paid and how much they are supposed to pay. You will then know if ASUP are lying." He said.

Speaking generally, Mr. Kola Abiola declares that ASUP MAPOLY are joining the general ASUP strike across the country. "If Nigeria is sick, is Ogun State not sick as well," he said.

The about eight minutes call has publicly revealed that the stand of ASUP are;
1. That Ipokia construction should be completed and ND 1 admission should take place.
2. If Ipokia would not be completed, there should be admission in MAPOLY.
3. The salaries of ASUP should be settled.

We however call on the governor pleading that he look diligently into this issue and put the students in mind.

COMRADE OLUWASEGUN S. AKINNIYI

SAVEMAPOLY - DAY2 - WHY FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD CALL ON THE OGUN STATE GOVERNMENT

We are writing to the Federal government of Nigeria to help us ask the state government why it has been difficult for Ogun state government to meet with the demand of Asup Mapoly when the future of over 25,000 students are at stake.

Asup Mapoly demands
  1. 1. Admission of N.D into Mapoly or Ogun state Poly (ipokia)
  2. 2. Payment of Outstanding 2month salaries
  3. 3. Written Agreement that Ogun state government will continue to pay them for the next 4yrs that Mapoly will exist for before going into extinction.
Greatest Nigerian Student! we could recall that the state government instruct the school management not to admit for 2017/18 academic session where as the state Government have not be the one sponsoring the payment of staff salaries instead this is done by the school management her self.
For Ogun State govt to put the school source of income on hold that means their should be a proper funding and paying of salaries from the govt, which reverse  is the case now.

I also want us to have it in mind that these lecturers are parent that depend on their salary for survival, why are you not paying them Ogun state govt?
Why is it HARD or difficult for Ogun state government to give Asup Mapoly a written document that they will continue to pay their salaries for the next 4years.

Join us live on FACEBOOK by 3pm as we will be talking to our past union leaders and Nans Ogun jcc chairman to discuss why they have been silent over this issue.

ASUP MAPOLY CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION OF ACTING RECTOR

Members of Academic Staff Union Of embattled Mashood Abiola Polytechnic are at logger head with the state governor over the appointment of Acting Rector for the institution.

The National Vice President of the Union Timothy Ogunseye says the appointment of Ayodeji Suleiman Tella who he described as a Retired School Principal as the acting Rector underscores the rot in the system.

Crisis started since the recent upgrade of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta to a university status, and the establishment of Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia.

The latest development shows that there is no end in sight to the face- off between the government and the aggrieves lecturers since the crisis started on July 12th, 2017.

Timothy Ogunseye later addressed Members of the union at the gate after being denied access into the polytechnic premises.

Effort to get the reaction of the Acting Rector failed as his Aides he was not within the Premises.

MANAGEMENT LOCKS OUT LECTURERS - MAPOLY CRISIS

The Management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Thursday, prevented members of National Executive of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics in Nigeria from entering the school premises.

This development came following the declaration of indefinite strike action by the Academic Staff Union of the institution .

The National Executive Council of ASUP which scheduled its press conference in the school on the ‘Deplorable condition of polytechnic education in Nigeria’ had to hold it at the school gate.

The Union’s zonal Coordinator, Olawale Omobaorun said, “they say we are not going to enter, and we are trying to tow the line of peace, we will stay at the gate and address the press.”

He also claimed that the state governor was after the life of the Chairman of the MAPOLY Chapter of ASUP, Comrade Kola Abiola.

According to him, “the government of the state is after our chairman and that is why you are not seeing the chairman here today”.

“Let the world know that the life of Com. Kola Abiola is in threat. If anything happens we will be ready to face the government.”

The ASUP in a statement by the President, Malam Usman Dutse lamented the sorry state of polytechnic education all over the country.

The statement, which was read by the Vice President, Timothy Ogunseye, highlighted the significance of Polytechnic education as well as the challenges thereof.

He said, Polytechnic education, “if well harnessed will boost Nigeria’s technological know-how, improve ICT, create millions of employment opportunities and raise the level of both theoretical and practical technological literacy.”

The Union said governments at all levels had subjected to annihilation the Polytechnic sector, which according to the statement “feeds and caters for millions of youths and families.”

It cited some issues facing the sector, which include, ‘Sorry state of State-owned institutions; ‘victimization of Union officers; ‘withdrawal of allowances; among others.

The statement reads in part: “Polytechnics and monotechnics belonging to state governments have continued to wallow in deplorable conditions”
It said chapter chairmen in various polytechnics in the country have been sacked “in glaring cases of victimization” while there have been no intervention.

The Union also decried what it called “Infractions in the appointment of Rectors” citing MAPOLY as an example.
It alleged that the new rector was a “retired school principal with little or no experience in teaching at the tertiary level, research and community service”.

The Union disapproved the appointment of Mr. Saliman Tella by the state government, saying there are more qualified personnel in the school.

It said MAPOLY can “boast of about 30 chief lecturers with fifty seven Ph.D holders”.
